Just as a number of other top Italian players Andrea Pirlo began his football career at Brescia, where he was spotted by Internazionale, joining the club in 1998. However Pirlo was unable to make an impression in Milan and was hired by Reggina and then Brescia. In 2001 Pirlo was transferred to the other Milan club, AC Milan. This time Pirlo was able to impress. He became the team’s key player and Italian champion in the 2003/2004 season.

Today the AC Milan team revolves around Andrea Pirlo. Despite his lack of length he dictates AC Milan’s game. Moreover Pirlo has a spectacular passing technique enabling him to reach the strikers and take the corners and free kicks. Not without reason did Pirlo score 4 goals this season from a free kick. Last season AC Milan ended up in second place in the Serie A. But because of the penalty imposed in connection with the bribery scandal they ended in third place. In the Champions League Milan’s performance was substantially better. Bayern Munich and Olympique Lyon were eliminated, but Barcelona was just a little to strong for Milan in the semi finals.

Pirlo also played a major role during the WC 2006. As key player his task was not only to find the strikers but to take the corners and free kicks as well. He scored a neat goal in the first match against Ghana from a free kick. After defeating Australia, Ukraine and Germany “La Squadra Azzurra” found itself in the finals against France. Zidane put the French ahead, but an early equalizer by Materazzi meant the match was to be decided on penalties. Pirlo scored for Italy and won the world title for Italy due to a miss by Trezeguet.
