Francesco Totti has been a real Romanista from a young age, as a young boy he sat in the stand in the Stadio Olimpico to support his team AS Roma. At the age of 16 he made his debut as a player. Totti was known as a great talent, but in his first years in Serie A he could not fulfil that promise. In his sixth year at AS Roma Totti played so well that he was called up for the Italian team. Totti’s big breakthrough came during the 2000 European Championship, where he played Alessandro Del Piero out of the first team and grew into the new star of the Squadra Azzura. Francesco Totti developed into a real number 10 who can decide a match with his brilliant inspiration. He proved that in the 2000/2001 season by becoming national champion with AS Roma again after 18 years.
2005/2006 was a strange season for Francesco Totti. Totti scored 15 times in 24 matches, a lot of goals for a midfield player, but he broke his fibula in February 2006 and was out injured for almost 3 months. Totti made his return on 11 May in the cup final against Inter which they lost 3-1. AS Roma finished in fifth place in the competition, but due to punishments for Juventus, AC Milan and Fiorentina, AS Roma finished in second place and will participate in the Champions League in the 2006/2007 season.
Totti only just recovered in time for this years World Cup in Germany. Totti played in all of Italy's matches and scored a very important goal against Australia in the last sixteen match. Due to a hard won victory in the final against France Totti won the world title in probably his last tournament.
