Miroslav Klose was born in Poland, but fled via France to Germany in 1987. Following a season with the amateur club FC Homburg, Klose finished up at FC Kaiserslautern in 1999. After one year Klose was chosen for the first team and scored 9 goals in his first season as a professional in the Bundesliga. In 2004 he earned a transfer to Werder Bremen, where he developed into a top centre forward, who due to his speed and heading ability scores regularly. On the last day of the 2004/2005 season Werder Bremen rose from the fifth to the third place in the Bundesliga following a victory over Klose’s old club FC Kaiserslautern.

Due to this third place Bremen participated in the Champions League last season. By scoring a number of goals Klose played an important role during the group phase in qualifying for the last sixteen. Werder Bremen were, however, knocked-out in the last minute of the away match by Juventus. Klose's performances became even more evident in the Bundesliga. In 26 matches he scored no less than 25 times! On the last day of the season he scored the winning goal against Hamburger SV, which put Werder Bremen in second place behind Bayern Munich.

The 2006 World Cup was to be a very successful tournament for Miroslav Klose. Despite the lost semi-final against Italy Klose was the tournament's top scorer with 5 goals. His most important goal was in the quarter-final against Argentina, when he scored a late equalizer.
